According to definition, a roofer is someone who undertakes repairs, replacements and constructions of new roofs.
They are generally specialised at this work and have normally a team that works in cooperation with them as they undertake the work on the roof.
They generally work with tiles and felt roof styles in Ireland compared to what roofers in America work with which is generally called roof shingles and asphalt roofs. Another example of the different names is soffits and fascia whereas in America, its known as siding.
They analyze the construction plans and make sure that the roofing is done in strict accordance with the design. Roofers also determine the materials, substrates and supportive accessories to be used for roof installations.
Even the specifications of the beams, trusses and rafters upon which roofs are installed are decided by roofers.
A roofer will inspect a roof to determine the best way to fix or replace the roof. They would need to consider the safest way to install the roof as well, whether that be setting up tiles and wearing safety harnesses in case there is a fall.
The way the repair or install a roof depends on the material the roof is constructed of. More experienced roofers would know how to properly install various types of roofing material.
There are 4 main types of Roofers:
- slate, ceramic and roof tiling and other nail-on product installers
- metal roofers focusing on metal panels
- single-ply roofers for flat roofs
- asphalt (tar and bitumen) - working with asphalt-based materials and felt
